Abstract

The purpose of the research was to collect and characterize traditional rice varieties. This work aims to avoid genetic erosion caused by the introduction and planting of improved material, using their productivity characteristics, grain quality, good adaptation and others, planting them directly in recommended areas or crossing them with other materials to obtain sufficient genetic variability for the selection of superior genotypes. The research was established in the EELS3 of INIAP3 and Samborondón, from August 2007 to January 2009. The variables evaluated were: vegetative cycle, plant height, number of panicles/m2, panicle excertion, shelling, leaf senescence, plant lodging, disease resistance, panicle length, number of grains per panicle, sterility percentage, yield, thousand-grain weight, grain length, white center, piling index. For the statistical analysis, the Randomized Complete Block Design, Tuckey's test and correlations were used. The conclusions were as follows: a) 55 traditional varieties were collected. b) 45 traditional varieties were characterized. e) A contribution was made to the creation of a bank of characterized traditional varieties. d) The results were disseminated.
