Context: The domestic wastewater treatment from the use of sequencing batch reactors was evaluated using domestic wastewater from different housing of the Camilo Ponce community sector, Barrio el Cafetal of the city of Babahoyo. A pilot plant was built consisting of a 3 mm thick cylindrical acrylic tank, in which various accessories were adapted to produce the typical processes of a discontinuous sequential aerobic reactor, which are: filling, reaction, sedimentation, and discharge of both the effluent and the sludge at the bottom of the tank. Objective: The objective of the investigations was to remove the organic matter present in domestic wastewater in terms of BOD, in order to comply with the maximum permissible limit established in the environmental regulations for discharge to a body of fresh water. Method: A laboratory accredited by the Ecuadorian Accreditation Service was used to carry out the effluent sampling. Results: The result obtained in the first investigation was a maximum BOD removal of 36.34%, and in the second investigation it was a maximum BOD removal of 93.61%. Conclusions: It is concluded that the adjustments made in the second investigation managed to increase the removal of organic matter in terms of BOD, and in this way comply with the maximum permissible discharge limit of the current Ecuadorian environmental regulations.
