Abstract

Quinoa is one of the main products exported by Bolivia, produced in the highlands of the Department of Oruro; its processing generates wastes such as saponin, an agro-industrial residue with surfactant and biodegradable properties that accounts for half of the total byproduct. The objective of this study is to experimentally and statistically validate its foaming capacity using the Ross-Miles Method (ASTM D1173) to establish its potential viability in sustainable fire extinguishers. Experimental tests were conducted at a 1:10 ratio, recording foam height as a function of time and yielding a decay rate of 0.002 to 0.003, which demonstrates moderate stability and an acceptable foaming capacity. It is concluded that the foaming capacity of quinoa saponin is satisfactory compared to the chemical surfactants used in conventional fire extinguishers, making it a viable substitution alternative that minimizes environmental pollution and health risks within the framework of sustainable industrial safety and agro-industrial waste valorization.
