The objective of this review is to show the scientific evidence that explains the importance of problem-basedlearning as an educational strategy for medical students in the period 1984-2020. This descriptive review
was carried out by searching for bibliographies using several documentary sources. It was based on the
descriptors or keywords and the objective of the research, obtaining that they explain the importance
of problem-based learning as an educational strategy for medical students in the period 1984-2020.
This descriptive review was carried out by searching for bibliographies using several documentary sources.
It was based on the descriptors or keywords and the objective of the research, obtaining primary sources
from original publications in scientific studies and recent information, as well as secondary sources in
electronic databases such as: Dialnet, Microsoft Academic, ERIC, ANUIES, SCIELO, Redalyc.org, MEDLINE,
Index Medicus, LILACS, EMBASE, SCOPUS, etc. and sources of information in evidence-based journals. 60 research
articles were selected following the descriptors or keywords, of which 30 articles were excluded for
not meeting the proposed objectives, 11 did not correspond to PBL, but were related to other teaching and
learning strategies, and 19 articles were from the but they are related to other teaching and learning
strategies, and 19 articles were from PBL: of which 1 article focused on learning in chemical sciences,
1 article on veterinary anatomy, and one article on kinesiology. The scientific articles reviewed explain
the importance of problem-based learning, as an educational strategy for medical students at universities, in the period 1984-2020, allowing the application of this educational strategy in the medical career.
