Abstract

Human Anatomy is one of the four subjects in the curriculum of the Medical Degree program at the University of Guayaquil since its founding in 1883 and is currently mandatory in all Health Sciences programs worldwide. Its foundation rests on the comprehensive and detailed study of the inanimate human body, a mandatory preclinical requirement throughout undergraduate studies. Graduates will apply what they have learned in their professional practice, both on inanimate human subjects and on hospital patients. The incorporation of real models into the Health Sciences guarantees ethical and solid training in a field that demands assertiveness in clinical evaluation and diagnosis, which, if not done properly, could compromise a person's health. A survey analyzes these aspects to determine the value of practice with real models; it concludes that simulators or other devices distance future professionals from reality.
