The most precious asset of human beings, and one that belongs to any society that prides itself on being civilized, is undoubtedly life.
Society, through the legal system to which it is subject and through criminal legislation, naturally seeks to protect life by imposing severe penalties with the aim, if not of repairing the damage or, strictly speaking in legal terms, of establishing justice, then at least of deterring potential murderers from committing the irreparable damage of taking a human life.
