Abstract

In the era of digital transformation, universities play a key role not only as knowledge generators but also as agents of social change through their engagement with society. This article presents a literature review on the synergy between academia and technological advancement, highlighting how university engagement contributes to reducing the digital divide in Latin America. Data from international organizations, such as the World Bank and the OECD, reveal inequalities in access to and use of technology in the region. Additionally, successful engagement projects that have supported the development of SMEs and vulnerable communities through technology and knowledge transfer are discussed. Finally, it is concluded that artificial intelligence and emerging technologies represent strategic opportunities to strengthen university-society engagement and mitigate the negative effects of the digital divide.
