Easuring the carbon footprint at ESPAM-MFL: an approach towards university sustainability

Abstract

Universities are assuming a leading role in the transition to a decarbonized society, playing an
essential function in quantifying greenhouse gas emissions. In this context, this research aimed
to evaluate the carbon footprint generated by the activities of the Manuel Félix López Higher
Polytechnic Agricultural School of Manabí (ESPAM MFL). To this end, the methodology established
by ISO 14064-1:2020 was applied, considering three scopes after the exhaustive identification of
emission sources. The results determined that ESPAM MFL’s carbon footprint in 2024 amounted to
1,631.05 tons of CO2 equivalent per year, with scope one being the largest contributor at 53.28% of
the total. In conclusion, determining the carbon footprint allows the institution to move towards
a net-zero emissions model and sustainable development.
