The Morroa aquifer in northern colombia: anthropogenic pressures and management challenges

The Morroa Aquifer, which supplies nearly 500,000 inhabitants in Sucre and Córdoba (Colombia),
is undergoing accelerated deterioration due to overexploitation and contamination associated
with various human activities. This study examines its current condition through a mixed-methods
approach that integrates climatological analysis, water demand estimations, spatial analysis
techniques, and a review of existing public policies. The findings reveal a critical deficit: natural
recharge meets only 14.78% of the projected water demand for 2023. Sources of contamination
were also identified in key infiltration zones. Although authorities have implemented measures
such as artificial recharge, regulatory instruments, and environmental education initiatives, these
efforts show institutional and technical limitations. The study concludes that the aquifer’s longterm
sustainability depends on stronger water governance grounded in reliable technical evidence,
coherent territorial planning, and sustained community participation
